City of Edmonton recommends 8.1% tax hike for 2025

The City of Edmonton is proposing an 8.1% tax increase for 2025 to address a projected $34 million deficit, exacerbated by inflation and population growth. The increase aims to replenish the financial stabilization reserve and fund the 2025 election. City staff are also seeking $8.5 million in ongoing savings through cuts to phone contracts and the Heritage program. Additionally, a $152 million increase is recommended for the capital budget, focusing on neighborhood renewal and the Terwillegar Drive Expressway. Reports will be presented to city council on Nov. 13.
